The first Beetle

It was already in 1934 that the brilliant automobile designer Ferdinand Porsche presented a plan for a German „Volkswagen“. The first prototypes 1936/37 showed the characteristic design of the future Beetle. On time for the laying of the foundation stone of the Volkswagen factory on the 26th of May 1938 the first three models, which had been produced by Porsche, could be presented in their final design.

The first Beetle

It was already in 1934 that the brilliant automobile designer Ferdinand Porsche presented a plan for a German „Volkswagen“. The first prototypes 1936/37 showed the characteristic design of the future Beetle. On time for the laying of the foundation stone of the Volkswagen factory on the 26th of May 1938 the first three models, which had been produced by Porsche, could be presented in their final design.
The car was called „Beetle“ for the first time by the New York Times on the 3rd of July 1938 and in 1941 the first Beetle to be produced in the Volkswagen factory came off the conveyor belt. At the end of 1946 the official delivery for civic councils, companies, the railway and similar clients began but only on ration coupon.
The Beetle speedo of 1946 is almost identical with the speedometer of the very first Porsche 356 from 1947.

And today, after 60 years?
The fascination of this really rare speedometer lives on in our timepiece.
