Bugatti’s type 57 Atlantic represented the pinnacle of the creations of Jean Bugatti. 1936 Ettore Bugatti, founder of the world famous car company, had assigned his son Jean with the complete production of the “pur sang” automobiles.
The vertical fin with its countless rivets, reaching from the roof to the back of the car, the curvaceous mudguards the forward reaching headlights – all these details summed up to an outstanding automobile with the fantastic straight eight in its engine bay. Jean Bugatti was the only child of Ettore Bugatti who had inherited the absolute sense for forms and style. The fact that only four Atlantic were built added to its myth.
Jean Bugatti met his death on August 11, 1939, when driving a Bugatti 57C that had just won the famous 24 hour race at Le Mans and attempting to avoid a bicyclist who suddenly appeared on the scene coming exiting a parish road. “Le patron” Ettore Bugatti never recovered from this stroke o fate.
