Sixty years ago, in October 1948, Jaguar presented a new sports car at the London Motor Show in Earls Court to a thrilled public, a car that would change the world: the XK 120.
Under the long bonnet rested the core of the thrilling new machine: a completely new six cylinder with double overhead camshafts, a capacity of 3442 cc and a power output of breathtaking 160 hp. It was the first time in history that a dohc engine was used in a production car. The denomination 120 referred to the top speed of the car: 120 mph. In fact it could even go quicker.
Never before or after had Jaguar’s founder William Lyons erred in estimating the possible sales. In just a few weeks time the XK 120 had been designed. It should act as an eye catcher along the Mark V saloon that was presented at Earls Court as well. Lyons and his crew estimated a figure of roundabout 200 vehicles that could be sold.
Not so! Jaguar was overrun by orders especially from the US. When in 1954 the succeeding XK 140 came into production, Jaguar had sold more than twelve thousand XK 120 in the three body versions Open Tourer Sport (OTS), Drop Head Coupé (DHC) and Fixed Head Coupé (FHC).
The XK 120 not only flabbergasted sixty years ago – until today it has remained as the epitome of the British sports car.
